Rand Refinery

Krugerrand
The first Krugerrand was minted in 1967. It is the first coin that contains exactly 1 Troy Ounce of gold, which is the standard trading weight for gold. The coin is still minted by the Rand Refinery. The Krugerrand coin is one of the most famous investment gold coins. Paul Kruger adorns the coin’s front whilst the image of a "Springbok" antelope appears on the back. The alloy of gold and copper gives the coin its beautiful red / gold color.

Rand
Rand gold coins were first introduced in 1961 as a replacement for the South African pound. 1 and 2 Rand coins can be used as legal tender in South Africa, but have now mostly fallen into the hands of collectors and investors. Gold Rand coins have not been minted since 1983 when they were in turn fully replaced by the Krugerrand.
